What is chaga?
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a fungus that grows on birch and some other deciduous trees.
It is also called:
- chaga;
- black birch mushroom;
- birch canker.
Chaga's exterior is black, rough, and irregularly shaped, while the interior is brownish or orange.
The mushroom grows very slowly and can develop on a tree for many years. Mature chaga is extremely hard, so it can usually only be removed from the tree using a sturdy knife or axe.
Wild chaga from the Baltic forests
The chaga used in this product is naturally grown and harvested in the wild forests of the Baltic region.
The wild-growing mushroom forms under natural conditions, influenced by:
- seasonal changes;
- low and high temperatures;
- humidity;
- the tree it grows on;
- a long growth period.
The harvested chaga is carefully dried and ground into powder.
Long-standing tradition of use
Chaga has long been consumed by peoples of Northern Europe, Siberia, and other cold climate regions.
Traditionally, it was used to prepare:
- hot beverages;
- decoctions;
- infusions;
- herbal powder mixtures.
Today, chaga is often chosen as a functional mushroom to supplement a daily plant-based diet.
Natural chaga compounds
Chaga mushrooms naturally contain:
- polysaccharides;
- beta-glucans;
- melanins;
- polyphenolic compounds;
- triterpenic compounds;
- other natural mushroom metabolites.
The amount of these compounds may vary depending on the mushroom's growing location, age, tree species, and raw material processing.
Advantages of powder form

It can be:
- poured over with hot water;
- added to tea;

Chaga looks completely different from ordinary mushrooms
Chaga does not have the cap and stem we usually associate with mushrooms. On a birch trunk it forms a dark, hard, irregular growth that can look at first glance like burnt wood. Inside it is quite different: brownish or orange. That appearance is what gives chaga its other name, the black birch mushroom. Mature chaga can be hard enough that it has to be cut from the tree with a sturdy knife or an axe.
