For a long time, gout was called "the disease of kings." It was the wealthy who could afford to eat rich, fatty foods.

Gout is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by a significant increase in uric acid levels in the blood and other body fluids. What are the symptoms of this disease? How can its course be alleviated? What is most important for the prevention of this disease? Gediminas URBONAS, a family doctor at Kaunas University of Medical Sciences Clinics, spoke about this.

This rheumatic disease creeps in slowly and unexpectedly. It more often affects those who enjoy eating delicious, fatty, and abundant meals, often drinking beer, etc. However, this is not a rule; sometimes, a predisposition to this disease is genetically inherited. Gout can also affect those who eat healthily, rarely consume alcoholic beverages, and so on.

According to specialists, the disease is caused by an excess of toxic substances - purines - which leads to joint inflammation (accumulated uric acid enters the fluid of the first toe joint and crystallizes there).

Why is gout so closely related to the food we consume? The answer is simple. Most animal products, such as pork, lard, dark beer, etc., contain purines. It is this substance, as mentioned, that transforms into uric acid, which later causes health problems.

Proper nutrition is the most important prevention of the disease

Excess uric acid increases arterial blood pressure, the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and gallstone disease.

It is especially dangerous that an excess of acid can cause kidney inflammation - nephritis.
To avoid all the listed health problems, it is necessary to change old lifestyle habits as soon as possible and as responsibly as possible.

This is not easy, but it is worth the effort for your health.

First of all, reduce or even completely give up fatty meats and alcoholic beverages. Forget the taste of beer, as it cannot be consumed when suffering from gout.

Why? Beer contains a lot of purines.

You should also avoid chicken, pork, or turkey liver, strong broths, and canned, processed foods.

Instead of acidifying coffee, choose herbal teas.

And what foods should you eat more of?
These include various vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals. The more raw fruits and vegetables, the more the body's acidic reaction will turn alkaline, and uric acid will not accumulate. By the way, fruits reduce purine levels and help prevent attacks. The good news is that you can use spices without restriction.
The rule for combating this disease: drink plenty of water and follow a diet.
