Dark Bamboo Whisk – Matcha Whisk
The traditional bamboo whisk or "chasen" is an indispensable tool for the Japanese matcha tea ceremony. The whisk has fine, handmade prongs that are carved from a single piece of bamboo. When using a "chasen", it is best to keep your wrist loose and relaxed and make quick zigzag movements in the shape of a "W" or "M" – this gives the matcha an ideal frothy texture.
Traditional method of preparing matcha:
The Japanese tea ceremony uses a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk "chasen", and a bamboo spoon "chashaku".
- Place 2 scoops of "chashaku" (1.5g) matcha powder into the matcha bowl.
- Pour 100ml of hot water, at a temperature of about 80 °C.
- Holding the "chasen" whisk in your hand, vigorously whisk the matcha with your wrist, drawing an "M" shape. In about 20 seconds, a perfect, jade-green foam should form.
- If you prefer a weaker matcha, you can add more water.
