You can understand that you are infected with parasites by certain symptoms. Since parasites release toxins, they poison the body and cause general malaise.
An infected person constantly feels fatigued. Their appetite may completely disappear or significantly increase, and their skin becomes pale. They also produce a lot of saliva at night.
A sick person usually feels discomfort in the stomach, is troubled by gas accumulation in the intestines (flatulence), often experiences constipation, or has irregular bowel movements.
Infection with parasites causes muscle and joint pain, allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and itchy rashes on the skin. Such individuals often fall ill, are constantly irritable, and frequently wake up at 2-3 AM.
Skin problems: dry skin, eczema, rash, papules, and ulcers;
Mood and anxiety disorders: mood swings, nervousness, depression, forgetfulness, restlessness.
Weight and appetite issues: weight gain, long-term obesity, loss of appetite or uncontrollable hunger, inability to gain or lose weight;

Muscle and joint problems: muscle pain, joint pain, muscle cramps, numbness in hands and/or feet, abdominal pain, heart pain, and arthritic pain;

Diagnosed with anemia due to iron deficiency;

Reproductive issues, PMS, urinary tract infections, cysts and fibroids, menstrual problems, prostate issues, urinary retention.

Last year, 2260 parasitic diseases were registered in Lithuania. According to specialists, most parasites can live in our bodies and torment us for years, as they release substances that prevent the immune system from recognizing them.
One worm helps with 10 to 250 thousand eggs.
Did you eat undercooked meat? Did you taste sushi made from stale fish? Did you swim in a pool of questionable cleanliness? Did the kids cuddle the cats they met in the garden and pet the dog they encountered in the neighborhood, while the adults let stray animals into the house? All of this can lead to an infection with intestinal worms.
Parasites love sugar and everything that turns into sugar. So, if you want to get rid of them – give up sugar, white flour products, sweet dairy, and heavily processed, refined foods.

"About 75% (1689 cases) of all parasitic infections are caused by pinworm infection, which is caused by a small worm that can grow up to 10 mm. This disease most commonly affects children attending daycare, as they easily infect each other. Mature worms begin to exit the intestines through the anal opening, usually at night. They secrete skin-irritating substances, causing itching in those areas. Additionally, the worms that crawl out lay eggs, which mature within four hours. Thus, the eggs accumulate everywhere – on bedding, clothing, and hands that the child uses to scratch."

The symptoms are not special – the child simply becomes irritable because their exit point is constantly irritated, and they may not want to eat. If parents do not notice the problem, the child may suffer for years, which weakens their physical and mental development. The treatment for this condition is very simple, but when using medication, it is crucial to pay great attention to hygiene: change the bedding, iron it with a hot iron after washing, clean dust frequently, and wash rags in water at 60 degrees. Additionally, the edges of the bathtub should be rinsed with water at that temperature after the child has bathed," said epidemiologist Aušra Bartulienė from the Center for Infectious Diseases and AIDS.

The second most common parasitic disease is ascariasis (240 cases). It is caused by a larger worm that can grow up to 10 cm. Infection occurs from dirty fruits, vegetables, and hands. Initially, a small larva hatches from the egg, which enters the bloodstream through intestinal capillaries and begins to migrate – it can travel to the lungs, enter the throat, and the person swallows it a second time. Then, in the intestines, it develops into an adult worm. While the larva is migrating, a dry cough appears, the cause of which cannot be determined. Later, when the worm settles in the intestines, the cough disappears, but intestinal-related symptoms may arise – poor appetite, mild diarrhea, skin rashes, allergic reactions. This is because the worms release their metabolic products, which sensitize the human body.

"In the human body, ascarids can live for 1-1.5 years. Moreover, all these parasites are very prolific, releasing a large number of eggs. One ascarid can produce 250 thousand eggs, while a female pinworm can produce up to 12 thousand. A distinctive feature of all parasites is that they live at the expense of others. They release certain substances that suppress the immune system, so the body does not react to them. Of course, some of them are recognized as foreign bodies and destroyed, but certainly not all. Additionally, due to the suppressed immune system, a person becomes sensitive to other infections and starts to get sick more often."

You can "catch" the ribbon along with the fish!

Some parasites in the body can grow to impressive lengths. For example, in the past 10 years, 1 pork tapeworm, 6 dwarf tapeworms, and 10 fish tapeworms have been identified. The pork tapeworm can grow from 3 to 4 meters, while the fish tapeworm can reach up to 10 meters. Infection can occur by eating meat or fish containing cysts with the tapeworm's head and neck. Fortunately, meat is checked quite thoroughly, so such cases are particularly rare today. The bad news is that when fishing, there is a chance of catching a tapeworm as well. The fish tapeworm can live in the body for up to 10 years.

"Although tapeworms are large, they are not easily caught. They absorb all the nutrients from the intestines, leading to a deficiency in the person. As a result, rather vague symptoms appear – a person feels weakness, has no appetite, or conversely, sometimes appetite can significantly increase, experiences diarrhea, and in certain cases, anemia may develop," said A. Bartulienė.
Larvae can travel throughout the entire organism
Another unpleasant parasitic disease spread by cats and dogs is called toxocariasis. Last year, 61 cases of this disease were registered. The eggs of these approximately 10 cm long worms can survive in the environment for up to four years. When an egg is ingested, it enters our intestines from contaminated objects – vegetables, fruits, dust that gets onto food during picnics, or water from open bodies of water used to wash fruits, larvae first hatch, which then enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. They can settle in the muscles, travel to the heart, eyes, and damage these organs. A common symptom is a slight fever, around 37.2 degrees Celsius, which can be quite exhausting for the body, a dry cough, especially at night, and quite strong allergic reactions. Sometimes this disease even mimics asthma. "A few years ago, children with asthma were studied. It turned out that some of them had toxocariasis," said the specialist.
The interviewee warned that the pathogens of this disease can be brought home by well-cared-for pets, so she advised against kissing them and letting them eat from your plates, which is especially loved by small children.
Cats are also carriers and spreaders of toxoplasmosis (there have been 163 registered cases in Lithuania).
A person can become infected with toxoplasmosis by consuming undercooked contaminated meat (especially pork, lamb, venison), water, fruits, and vegetables, as well as food prepared with kitchen utensils or surfaces that have come into contact with contaminated raw meat, fruits, or vegetables. Additionally, a person can become infected accidentally if the pathogens of toxoplasmosis enter the mouth while handling a cat's litter box, touching objects in the environment that have been contaminated with cat feces, or working in the garden.

The symptoms of the disease are similar to those of the flu: muscle pain, headaches, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever, and general weakness. They last for about two weeks. Ocular toxoplasmosis is characterized by eye pain, decreased vision, redness of the eyes, and sometimes tearing. This disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.
The liver can be irreversibly damaged

Through the capillaries, they enter the bloodstream and begin to migrate – to the chewing muscles, intercostal muscles, and diaphragm. The disease is characterized by high fever, pain, and sometimes swelling of the face, under the eyes, as well as pain in the hands and chest. If the larvae migrate to the heart, dysfunction of this organ may occur. The course of the disease can be very severe, so people should be responsible and check their meat – today it takes just a few hours,” advised A. Bartulienė.

"The liver is very vulnerable because of this. The biggest problem is that it takes 10-20 years for a cyst to grow, so a person does not feel any symptoms of the disease. Only when the bile ducts are compressed does pain occur, and an unclear formation is seen during an ultrasound. Treatment is complicated, and sometimes surgery is necessary. There are also cases where so many cysts form that it becomes difficult to remove them surgically, and they can grow into other organs," the specialist explained.
According to the speaker, although the spreaders of this disease are forest animals, the danger is indeed significant. Research data shows that in Suvalkija, as many as 57% of foxes are infected. With their feces, parasite eggs end up on the ground. "That is why eating unwashed berries, sorrel, or hare cabbage in the forest is dangerous. Often, people are convinced that their garden is clean, so they do not wash an apple picked from the ground. However, it is important to know that foxes are now very close to homesteads. They are not afraid of people or cars, and they mark their territory with feces," warned A. Bartulienė.

So the interlocutor strongly advised to maintain hygiene. However, she did not recommend taking deworming medication prophylactically, without knowing if it is necessary. First of all, these are very strong medications that have side effects on our body. Moreover, it has been observed that using these medications unnecessarily leads to resistance, just like with antibiotics. If we use them excessively, we simply won't have anything left to treat parasites. If there are suspicions, it is always more advisable to get tested. Especially since most tests are not complicated.
